Liposuction
The most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the U.S., liposuction sculpts the body by removing undesirable fat that has not responded to diet and exercise from areas such as the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, chin, cheeks, neck and upper arms. Local anesthesia or general anesthesia may be used, and the procedure can last anywhere from one to five hours depending on the amount of fat being removed.
There are several different methods surgeons use when performing liposuction, including suction-assisted liposuction (SAL), power assisted liposuction (PAL) and VASER. In all types, tumescent fluid is injected into the area to be treated. Then a tiny incision is made in as inconspicuous a place as possible, and a cannula (small tube) breaks up the fat layer and suctions it out.

Tumescent Liposuction
Sometimes, even if you stick to a healthy diet and a regular exercise regimen, you can't seem to eliminate fat pockets and cells from your body's problem areas, especially in the legs, buttocks, hips, stomach, arms, chin, neck, or ankles. Tumescent liposuction is a surgical procedure that targets these problem areas to eliminate excess fat cells, leaving your body more sculpted, toned, and lithe. It is also considered the safest type of liposuction possible, allowing for removal of significant amounts of fat with very little blood loss. It can be performed under local anesthesia for moderate amounts of fat so that there is a shorter recovery period. For larger areas of fat removal, general anesthesia is usually warranted and the recovery may last several days.
In tumescent liposuction, fluid with local anesthetic is injected. Then, a small incision is made in the area to be liposuctioned. Next, a thin, hollow tube is inserted into the incision, and fat cells, pockets, and tissues are vacuumed out and discarded. The procedure, performed on an outpatient basis, is conducted under anesthesia and can last up to two or more hours. Common side effects include temporary bruising, numbness, soreness, and burning sensations, but most will subside within a few days' or weeks' time. Once the area has healed, the patient will notice a firmer, tighter physique.
